Holidays 2009

We had a sparsely decorated but quite satisfactory Christmas this year, with little RR getting all the presents her attention span could handle. We enjoyed dinner at Aunt K's with Grandma E, where RR had a game of hide-and-seek with Aunt K. We also enjoyed brunch the next day at Aunt I's.

These past few weeks RR has been using several two-word phrases, including big box, Mommy's chair, DG's phone, and wet diaper (!)

Best wishes to all for a wonderful New Year.

Hanging In There

Nina has been in daycare approaching two months now, and the last sentence of my previous blog post has proven all too true. Little RR's most recent cold has affected her disposition in addition to her sinuses, so we're hoping even more for a quick recovery. In between colds, we are doing well. The photo shows the breakfast table scene on a recent very chilly morning.

And Now, A Few Words From Our Little Girl...

Little RR isn't always very vocal, but she seems (relatively) talkative just after waking up, and around dinnertime. So, I thought it would be fun to make a little compilation of her words. These were extracted from a recording about 8 minutes long during dinner. Admittedly, some of her "words" do require some interpretation.

In other news, she came back from her 18-month checkup with a clean bill of health, which we hope continues! She's just starting in daycare now, which everyone tells us will be the end of our good luck so far with colds and the like.

Yes, We Have No Negativity...

I guess it was inevitable. Just a few days after my last post, little RR got into a kitchen cabinet which I had neglected to secure and T, alarmed, said "NO! No! the cabinet stays shut..." which apparently made an impression.

The next day, T heard a commotion behind her, and turned around to find that RR had opened another cabinet and was sternly admonishing the apparently naughty saucepans, shouting at the shelf "No! No! No! ...."

I hasten to add, though, that most of the time she is not at all negative and continues to give us many wonderful smiles! Below she is peering around a tree by the local library.

More Words!

Little RR has been steadily increasing her vocabulary, and it is exciting to frequently hear her try out new words. Some she will only repeat if we say them first, but the below list that T. has been keeping are words she has said spontaneously. A glimpse of the intersection of what we say to her, what captures her attention, and what sounds she can make:

First Words: Dada, Momma, Done, Baa (for sheep), bah(balloon), ba(ball), buh(button), boh(bottle), wa-wa(water), doh(dog), duh(duck), ??-?? (a version of her name)
Later: Off, Down, Up, On, Burp, Bath, Wash, Nose, Toes, More, Mouth, Bounce, Hi, Bye
8/1/09: Grass, Watch (noun), Watch (verb), Woof, Pants
By 8/17/09: arms, high, train, purse, yes, one, tree, blinds, bonk, truck, bus, dog, ball, duck, bump, dirt, ground, home, around, (to)morrow, vroom-vroom
8/20/09: pig, cow, milk
By 8/27/09: hair, dance, rock, music, uh-oh, noise, neh(no), bird, whoa
early 9/09: walk, D.G.(doting grandmother), yeah, boo(boo-boo), block, hippo, dress(as verb), rock (as verb)
9/2/09: bunt(button)
9/4/09: wind(window)
9/9/09: bread
9/11/09: app(apple), 'gin(again), yuck(yogurt), bits(broccoli), moon
9/19/09: girl
Recently by 9/24/09: ch(cheerios), juice, suns(sunscreen), sin(fan), sun(phone), book, dolly, moo, steps, winnie, kiss, snuh(snail), dass(glasses)
9/24/09: ring, broccog-e (broccoli), big, me
9/25/09: sing
---
I thought it interesting that she almost never says "no" (neh), although I know many kids say that a lot. She can say it, but usually just when she is reading a specific book ("No no, you say, that isn't right/ The pigs say 'oink' all day and night"). She does say "done" to mean many things, though. The "f/ph" sound isn't really working yet, so phone sounds more like"sun".

A Funny Letter

If I may be permitted my very first non-baby-related blog post (as far as I can remember)... I got a funny letter in the mail today.

To appreciate the joke I should mention that I gave blood at a Red Cross drive last month. It hadn't been on my agenda but a co-worker suggested we stop in at the drive next door during our lunch break, so I went along. I contributed my unit of blood, and I also fainted, was revived, threw up, spent the rest of the day lying flat on a couch at work, and that evening had the wife, child and mother-in-law spend two hours on the road to come up and retrieve me & car and drive my unhappy self back home gritting my teeth whereupon I lurched out and redecorated the driveway. I was woozy all the next day, but was more-or-less recovered and back at work the second day. I was later told the person whose afternoon meeting I cancelled thought I was probably just lazy.

At any rate, the cheery letter today from the Red Cross said,

"...You really have done something amazing. And now you can do something even more remarkable. Come back, and give blood again. [...] Has anything else you've done lately made you feel this good?"

Ha ha. Fortunately, no.

Less Baby, more Little Girl

I don't suppose there is any one moment when you leave "baby" behind and really start growing up, but looking at RR now, it certainly seems she is well on her way. I don't know if it's the dress that is no longer too big for her, a different pair of shoes, the more confident walk and posture, or her increasingly engaging expressions. She is more frequently repeating words she hears us say, although not all of them have reached her permanent vocabulary yet.

When she pulled a small (empty) camera bag off a cabinet and started playing with it, I said "Oooh... please put that back." To my surprise, she immediately picked it up and put it back on the shelf. I suppose my tone of voice was as clear as any specific words, but I was encouraged that she not only understood my meaning but actually followed through on my request as well.

The Dinner Tower

Lately, RR has been distracted while eating. She tends to reach for random remote objects and becomes more difficult to feed, but a few toys on the dinner tray have placated her. Just this evening, we were excited to see her build up her very own tower with the available toys! Previously, she has confined her tower activities to knocking over what we had stacked up for her. I am sure she has a great future in architecture or engineering.

Have Hat, Will Travel

Ever vigilant against the possibility of sunburn, we bring a hat for little RR whenever we go out with her, and we usually put it on her head before opening the door. She has quickly picked up on this cue, so now if she finds a hat (of any size) she seizes upon it eagerly and marches towards the door. In a pinch, some non-hat items have also been pressed into service this way.

When we visited her Ohio grandparents last week, she got hold of one of my mother's hats and made a beeline for the door. She was clearly anticipating further exciting outdoor adventures, though the poignant gaze over her shoulder suggested a worry the door might never open.

She's Walking!

Little RR had taken a few steps on her own back around her first birthday, but not much after that. However starting on May 31 she began walking practice in earnest. Within days she went from five steps in a row to twenty-five before plopping down on the ground, and after a week she has really gotten the hang of it.

All Done!

The AAP recommends that children under 2 should watch no TV at all. However, bad parents that we are, we turned on the insidious box as a distraction while T attempted to trim a fingernail.

Since this was our own home video of playing in the park, it was hopefully not too harmful. Little RR watched with rapt attention, and the fingernail was successfully trimmed. The video came to an end, whereupon RR immediately said "All done!"

Now, this has been her favorite phrase around meal times, but sometimes it's not clear if she really is full, or she just likes saying the words. The issue is confused further by the fact that there may not be much room in the tummy for more potatoes or vegetable beef pilaf, but there is always more room for Oo-oo-os.* (*small, round, comes in a yellow box, registered trademark of General Mills)

At this point it must be mentioned that T, looking over my shoulder, protests that RR is clear on the meaning of the phrase. For example she says "all done" when reaching the end of a bottle. But be that as it may, she has recognized and announced the end of a video as well, and in fact, she also seemed unhappy that the video had concluded, and clearly wanted to see more. Is she falling into the clutches of the TV already? Wondering about this, I started another of our home videos, this one showing her crawling around the living room and playing with a few toys.

She watched the screen attentively, not being distracted by daddy playing nearby with his camera, but she did not seem as enthralled with this one. Not as much exciting movement as the swings at the park, I suppose.

There wasn't much of real interest until the very end of the video. At the end we see that exciting moment where the star of the show suddenly manages to grab that special black toy with so many buttons on one side, the one that the grown ups seem to think is important, and is usually kept out of reach on top of the TV. That moment was of course the high point of the show.

"All done!" she said cheerfully.

The First Birthday

Our little RR turned one year old on April 27, 2009. Counted by the minutes before she falls asleep, the time drags, but from a longer view the time really has flown by. We had a small party on Saturday 5/2 attended by Great Aunt K, Great Aunt I, the Doting Grandmother, and the Proud but Still A Bit Tired Parents. To commemorate her first year, she stood up on her own for the very first time this week, and even took a few tiny steps.

At her 12-month checkup, her pediatrician confirmed that RR is a big girl- at 31 3/4" she is the height of an average 18 month-old, and about 99th percentile for 12 months. In fact the Dr. got confused and started going through the 18-month material, before being reminded she's only 1 year old. It turns out that height before age 2 does not correlate to adult height, but evidently she has been eating well.

On her strolls around the neighborhood, RR uses one of her few words "Doh!" with great excitement whenever she notices a dog. However, this term applies to a select cross-section of animals, including large dogs, some cats, and even a squirrel, but not necessarily small dogs. In new food developments, she can pick up cheerios one by one from a tray to eat, but the process has about a 15% loss rate. I had not appreciated before how well cheerios can roll, but our kitchen cleanups discover them hiding in every corner.

A New Word

Our little Redowa Rose is really growing up! She has already been saying "dada" and "mama" for some time, although that includes some interpretation on our part. To be more complete, she usually says "da-da-da-da... da..." or variations on that theme. But just this week while watching a dog outside, she has said "do-guh" pretty distinctly, so that's an exciting development.

In other news, after pushing herself up on a small, knee-high toy box she actually stood up without support for a moment, before sitting down. More progress!

In the photo she's wearing a shirt from the D.G. (doting grandmother) featuring her namesake flower.

March Updates

We put up the baby fence in the living room in part to protect the electronics from curious little fingers, and that worked for awhile. Little RR is now standing up by the TV and "cruising" sideways along the railing to the stereo, which she turns on and selects tape, CD or radio, often listening to NPR. After playing elsewhere for a bit, she comes back and turns it off again. Her musical taste also extends to various toys that play tunes, ranging from Beethoven's 5th to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. She has become very adept at pushing buttons to play her tunes, and tonight was regularly getting two toys to play the same tune concurrently.

Having seen us use the computer she is anxious to join in the fun, and she has taught us several things about the laptop that we didn't know. In just seconds she called up "This Computer is Locked- Please Login" which I'd never seen on this system, causing some consternation (fortunately, a simple return instead of a password turned out to work.) The next time, while we were viewing some of her baby photos, a few brisk keystrokes popped up a form to report the web page as an online scam. On another page, she found a feature that reads it out loud in a synthesized voice. The computer is certainly more interesting with her around.

Just last month she would pick up a book and attempt to open it from the top, bottom or spine edge, but now she usually holds books right-side-up and is better able to turn the board-type pages. She can scoot across the floor quickly on her hands and knees, but curiously pays no attention to toys or books in her way. Items caught in the undercarriage are dragged some distance in her haste to get from here to there. She is getting a little heavier to pick up now; this evening after her bath, the scale reported 10.05 kg.

Nine Months

RR got a clean bill of health on her 9-month checkup, at which time she was the height and weight of the median 12-month old (!) In related news, she has already outgrown some 12-month outfits and we have been buying more baby clothes. So far she wears them contentedly, however mismatched or over-the-top pink they may be.

She is making rapid progress in the world of widgets. After watching us at the computer she wants to join in, and so far seems to understand using the scroll wheel on the mouse to move through pages on the screen. Her random mouse-clicks have uncovered several menus on the computer which I had not seen before. Phone calls within reach are often subject to surprise touch-tone bleeps and sudden hangups.

Although she won't speak into the phone yet, RR is working hard on "ma-ma" and "da-da" and a few other similar sounds. "Da-da" seems to be a happy identification, but so far "ma-ma" seems as much a general distress signal as a reference to a specific person.

She now frequently stands up by herself, using some nearby object for balance. This is often a low table, but she has managed to stand using a nearby parental leg and even just a smooth wall. Attempts to stand using a small toy or round ball have not yet succeeded. Just today she made a small side-step while standing in her crib, so "cruising" along parallel to a support is no doubt just around the corner.

Before I became a parent my exposure to babies was brief and infrequent, and I somehow had the idea that they were mostly passive items that sat quietly in their parents' arms. In practice I have found that is almost never the case, as RR is always going somewhere, but there is a brief period of calm before sleep which is a nice moment.

Trying New Skills

We have reached several new milestones in the past few weeks. When she woke up before, she would usually be lying down or sometimes sitting, but now when get her after a nap, we usually find her standing up! She can pull herself up on the crib railing. Another big moment for me came this week, just after getting home, I heard her high clear voice distinctly say "da-da". Probably not intentional, but a wonderful moment nevertheless. Last week she was doing a caterpillar-like crawl with her tummy on the ground, but this week she has started doing a real hands-and-knees crawl. That means she can get around much more quickly now, so we're going to have to make sure to keep up!

Moving Up

With her feet extending past the front edge of her infant carseat, little RR has grown into the next size up. The new "True Fit" model is quite a bit bigger (it even has its own cup holder) but should last her several more years. Add one to the list of baby items now outgrown. Note, this is a composite photo- we do not have twins.

In other news, while she is not yet really crawling, she has managed some forward wriggles using her elbows. She can also cover ground surprisingly quickly by a series of sideways rolls; flipping from back to tummy and continuing over to her back again, so she is quite the mobile little girl.
Which reminds us that it is really past time to get the baby-proofing done.

A Gentle Touch

In the last month, little RR has seemed more awake and aware than before, paying attention to us (at times) as if understanding something of what we are saying, and looking at each person speaking in turn. Several times she has indicated by looking at the water bottle and saying "Mmmm! Mmmm" that she wants a drink. She also continues to improve her hand control- no longer just flexing all fingers at once for grabbing, she is now picking up toys deliberately and tracing along edges with a single finger, seeking out interesting bumps and textures. She will clap her hands, and bang two toys together.

She will consistently turn the pages in the books we read to her (if often a bit faster than we would) and sometimes picks out a book she wants. She lies on her side to play with toys, and will easily turn herself over, sometimes making changing difficult! On the other hand she helps when dressing, pulling her arms in and out of sleeves, ducking her head when pulling off a shirt. We are working on getting her to fall asleep in her crib by herself, and have succeeded at least once. We always put her down on her back, but she now sometimes ends up sleeping on her tummy. One thing that hasn't changed is her big cheery smile greeting us each morning, a great boost for her sleepy parents.
